Summary:
For the first time, Action Jeunesse de l'Ouest-de-l'Île (AJOI), in collaboration with the City of Dorval has opened a warming shelter for people experiencing homelessness. Set up in a trailer near the transit terminus, the space can accommodate up to 10 people each night, from 4 p.m. to 8 a.m., offering beverages, snacks, and support from two psychosocial workers.
Tania Charron, Executive Director of AJOI, noted that homelessness has increased in the West Island since the pandemic. According to her, there is a severe lack of shelter beds in the region:
“At the Ricochet shelter, we’re turning away hundreds of people at the door every week.”
Mayor Marc Doret described homelessness as a relatively new but growing issue in Dorval, with approximately 15 people currently living on the streets. He hopes this temporary initiative, running until the end of March, will save lives and give social workers the opportunity to reconnect people with available resources.
